Spacekraft: Tavern Hero Qualifier Tournament Preview

In Fireside Gathering, Tournament by Matticus0 Comments

The upcoming Tavern Hero qualifier is certainly going to be a unique event. With Whispers of the Old Gods debuting less than a week before the tournament and Standard being the new format going forward, players will have a limited number of days to both come up with deck ideas and properly play test them. Net decking should be a minimal factor going in and players will be relying on their playing skill and their deckbuilding abilities.

Let’s break down some of the notable community players along with predictions from both myself and guest judge, ItzBolt of UBC eSports!

Tournament Favourites

RealTerror – The winner of the first Tavern Hero at Spacekraft, RealTerror may be more focused on finetuning his decks and strategy for his upcoming tournament at Dreamhack where he will be competing alongside his Team UBC teammates as they look to take the Collegiate Star League challenge. While an excellent pilot, can RealTerror come up with something innovative in time?

Matt predicts: Top 4
ItzBolt predicts: Top 4

TheJordude – Complexity’s TheJordude will be searching for his first tournament win of the season. Coming off back to back second place performances at both the Collegiate Colosseum in Orange County, CA along with the recent Tavern Hero qualifier at Spacekraft, he has all of the tools and skills necessary to take the tournament. He just needs the cards to go his way.

Matt predicts: Winner
ItzBolt predicts: Finalist

KingOfKimchi – Like RealTerror, KingOfKimchi will be competing at Dreamhack representing Team UBC. A 3-2 finish in the last group stage led to him getting swept and shutout by TheJordude in the quarterfinals. He is an up and coming prodigy within the community and all eyes will be on him to see whether or not he can handle the pressure.

Matt predicts: Top 4
ItzBolt predicts: Winner

KRAXXIMUS – You never would have guessed it by looking at him, but Kraxximus is one of the most consistent players in the VanHearth scene. He placed Top 4 in the Spacekraft Tavern Hero, won the Player’s Wanted Tavern Hero, and 1st in the Winter Veil Fireside dating back to December 2015. A top 8 finish is almost guaranteed for Kraxximus — As long as he isn’t late to round 1.

Matt predicts: Finalist
ItzBolt predicts: Top 4

Zuthor – Taking 1st place overall in the February UBC Hearthstone Cup, Zuthor was poised for a strong group stage performance and a deep playoff run. Unfortunately, a disappointing 2-3 record dashed his playoff hopes in the last Tavern Hero. Still, he is a strong player who can steal games off any player. He will be looking to bounce back with a statement showing.

Matt predicts: Top 8

Potential Dark Horses

Brohnan – In previous local tournaments, poor Brohnan has usually been eliminated by the eventual tournament winner. He came close to emerging out of the group stage with an undefeated 5-0 record but eventually fell to emerging rookie player, NakedGiraffe.

Matt predicts: Top 8
ItzBolt predicts: Top 8

NakedGiraffe – She was a last minute attendee who was convinced to join because there were an odd number of participants. An impressive 4-1 run in the group stage saw her playoff hopes disappear as she was shutout by Racolek. Was that a fluke performance or can she pull it off again?

Matt predicts: Top 8
ItzBolt predicts: Doesn’t make it out of group

Bocharenai – Travelling from a land far away, Bocharenai is a skilled player with signs of greatness. He placed Top 4 in the Player’s Wanted Fireside and is looking to secure his first tournament win of the season in an attempt to snag a position in the Spring Preliminaries.

Matt predicts: Top 4
ItzBolt predicts: Top 8

MLGAnakin – While his skills as a caster are known, his tournament play can be inconsistent. He was not able to show up at the two previous Tavern Qualifiers and should not be entirely underestimated.

Notably Absent

ItzBolt – He will be quietly meditating and contemplating what it will take for success prior to Team UBC heading into Dreamhack.

Racolek – More known for being “that guy who plays on his phone”, Racolek has placed consistently in tournaments he has participated in. None of his opponents have teched in a Nozdormu against him because they don’t expect a phone player to do well. Unfortunately, he will not be present at this event.
